6 Electric Furnace Repair Issues

electric-furnace-repairMost advice on the internet about furnaces is geared toward natural gas furnaces. That’s simply because gas furnaces are among the most popular kind of furnace.

Of course, there are plenty of homes with electric furnaces—and that’s no surprise either. Electric furnaces are cleaner, easier to install, and safer. The only problem is that, like any machine, they’re susceptible to wear and tear. This will lead to repair issues over time.

As long as you call in a repair as soon as possible, you can avoid incurring further damages or increases in your utility bill. Here are 6 repair issues you can look out for:

1. Bad Heating Element

Is the furnace simply refusing to start? Any number of heating elements could be to blame. If one of them has stopped working or has failed due to bad wiring, that can cause the rest of the system to stop functioning. You’ll quickly find yourself in a cold home. Fortunately, repairs should be as simple as replacing the broken element.

2. Broken Blower Motor

Perhaps your furnace seems to start, but there’s no hot air coming out of the vents. You may also notice the absence of a running fan. If that’s the case, then the blower motor may have burnt-out.

After hot air is created by the heat exchanger, the blower fan will send that hot air into the ducts. If that fan motor burns out, however, then your furnace will have no means to transfer that heated air. This can also cause overheating issues, so it’s important to have it fixed quickly.

3. Problems With the Sequencer

If every heating element in the furnace were to run at the same time, you’d quickly overload the circuit. Instead, the sequencer is there to turn the elements on and off without overloading the system. If the sequencer stops working, it can lead to the furnace tripping the circuit breaker or simply failing to provide warmth.

4. Broken or Malfunctioning Limit Switch

The limit switch is put in place to prevent your furnace from overheating. In its usual operation, it will stop the furnace from getting carried away with creating too much heater. If the limit switch is not working properly, however, it could just shut the furnace off entirely. Or, it may not operate at all, resulting in an overheating furnace.

5. Outdated Electrical System

Whether it’s due to bad or aged wiring, or from an electrical panel that cannot support all of your appliances, a wide array of electrical problems can stop your furnace from operating properly. These problems may even stem from the thermostat rather than the furnace itself, making it especially difficult to pinpoint the source of the issue. At the end of the day, it’s always best to get a professional to look things over for you.

6. Dirty Air Filter

And finally, always make sure to check the air filter before calling for furnace services in Fort Wayne, IN. Clogged air filters are one of the most common problems for furnace malfunction.
