What Makes Geothermal HVAC a Good Choice?

You’ve probably heard a lot in the news about geothermal heating and cooling systems. In fact, with record-breaking heatwaves affecting much of the world already, people are looking far and wide for new and inventive solutions to heating and cooling problems.

If you’ve heard of geothermal HVAC systems, or even if you are just a curious consumer who wants to start looking into alternative ways to heat and cool your home, this is the blog post for you!

We’re going to start by talking about how these systems work. Then, we’ll get into why geothermal heating and cooling in Fort Wayne, IN is such a powerful tool for both hot summers and cold winters. These systems are definitely where the industry is trending, and if you’ve got the budget to plan ahead, we recommend taking steps to invest in one of these units now!

Geothermal Heat Pumps: How They Work

Geothermal heating and cooling systems are sometimes called “ground-sourced heat pumps” which is a much more technical, yet accurate term to describe them. They’re heat pumps just like other HVAC systems, except they don’t source their heat from the air. They actually retrieve heat from beneath the earth’s core where temperatures stay relatively stable throughout the entire year.

These systems use water pipes that extend deep beneath the ground of your home where it’s cool all year round. Then, they cycle back up to a heat pump unit where they pump comfortable temperatures into the air by extracting the heat.

In the summertime, your heat pump will run in reverse and extract the heat from your home, depositing it beneath the ground where it dissipates. Basically, you’ve always got a place where your home can draw heat from, no matter how cold it gets aboveground.

Improved Efficiency and Longevity

There are two major reasons why people choose ground-sourced heat pump systems. Down below, we’ve decided to talk a bit about both.

  • Efficiency. Geothermal systems run at a fraction of the cost that a normal heat pump does. That’s because they’re pulling from stable conditions beneath the earth’s crust instead of from the air. Since the air heats up and cools down depending on the season, it makes it harder for heat pumps to adequately draw comfortable amounts of heat. Geothermal systems don’t deal with this and only need to use a little bit of electricity all year round.
  • Longevity. The pipe systems that draw heat from the underground are so stable that they can last up to 50 years when you first install them. While the heat pumps and other moving parts might need to be changed out, the most expensive components of your geothermal system are built to last for a very long time.

Investigate Your Options

Geothermal heating and cooling systems are wonderful units that can turn your home into an eco-friendly, efficient haven. However, they do require an asking price that’s significantly higher than other HVAC systems when it comes to installation. Work with our team members to budget for this system so you can effectively use one without breaking the bank!
